Announcing the Columbia 150

Andrew Linn took part in the Texas200 this year and wrote this report. Aparently he had a pretty good time because he had decided to organize a similar event for the Columbia River. It will be the Columbia 150 since that is the distance from the last dam to the mouth of the river.

Andrew has posted a new website - - with all the details. The first one will take place next August 10-14. Andrew was good enough to attend the Texas200 so we will make every effort to get to the Columbia 150.

Mystery Boat

The boat I own was built by a gentleman years ago that I never got a chance to meet; I bought it from my local Boy Scout troop who never used it and had it sitting in a barn for years.  I am not sure what type of boat it is, because I am pretty sure he built it himself. 

It's rather small measuring in at 13 ft. 8 in. total.  It is a standard marconi rig with a total mast length of 20 ft.  From forestay to mast is 4 ft., and from shroud to shroud is 4 ft. 2 in.  Also the mainsail has the number "48" on it.

SP Inspires Latest Near Miss Victory

Isle of Wight 15 August - There is no better place to see your materials and engineering in action than in competition racing. As project manager and part time crew member for the Near Miss racing team, SP’s Yannick Le Morvan knows first hand what is required to build a consistent race winner.

Near Miss stormed to victory in the X Trofeo S.M. La Reina - Rolex Cup in Valencia on the 10-13 July winning three out of seven of her races. This victory has put Near Miss into second place in the 2008 Quebramar Cup and with three races left the Near Miss team are well placed to push for honours. If their consistent performances continue then they will be the boat to beat.

The Farr-designed Near Miss was built at Latini’s boatyard outside Rome and incorporates a range of SP technologies including SE70 carbon prepreg, SA70 adhesive film, and Spabond adhesives. SA70 epoxy film is a toughened epoxy film on a lightweight carrier with excellent tack and drape characteristics. It offers many advantages over traditional wet lay-up techniques for bonding of composite skins to cores, including consistent bond-line thickness and weight, a high strain to failure ratio, toughness, handling convenience and a 6 week out-life at ambient temperature (21°C). SA70 was then applied, being specifically designed to offer impact resistant properties and high shear elongation when used in conjunction with SE70 low temperature curing prepreg, to produce a strong, tough yet lightweight structure.

Near Miss was completed before Yannick joined SP – so he is keen to point out that the decision to incorporate SP into the build was simply down to the quality and availability of the products!

Yannick explained, “As both a competitive sailor and marine technician I know a product only proves its worth on the ocean. The materials and support provided by SP in the build of the Near Miss have made a big impact on the project. SP is the only company who can offer a full package of products along with excellent technical support, so we now have a boat that has more than proved herself in the competitions she has entered and is among the leaders in her class.”

Cesme Handover Apporved

Camper & Nicholsons Marinas receive handover of Turkish site The handover of Cesme Marina located in the Izmir peninsula has taken place – with the Turkish Government officially passing the facility onto Camper & Nicholsons Marinas.

The marina is currently being redeveloped to bring it up to the standards you would expect from one of the world’s most prestigious yachting business names.

Cesme Marina, situated in the Aegean Sea, offers one of the world’s most beautiful cruising grounds. Currently undergoing redevelopment, the marina is set in a natural harbour and presently offers 180 berths up to 30m in length.

When complete in Spring 2009, capacity will be increased to 375 berths and will accommodate yachts up to 60m in length. All marine technical facilities will be provided and services will include fuel as well as fresh water and electricity. An 80 ton travel hoist will also be available for haul-out, along with technical support for yacht maintenance, engine repairs and electronics.

McConaghy Boats and SP; A Winning Combination

22 July, Isle of Wight, UK – Australian boat builder McConaghy has enjoyed a long history of creating racing boats that not only win races but break records. Their relationship with SP, the marine business of Gurit, has been an essential factor in helping them achieve continued success in racing on a global scale.

On 28 June 2008 McConaghy’s latest boat, the Farr designed ICAP Leopard, shattered the Isle of Wight annual Round the Island Yacht Race record with a time of three hours fifty-two minutes and five seconds. Her predecessor the Skandia Leopard had held the record for a total of seven years after breaking it in 2001. This latest victory for the ICAP Leopard comes on the back of the BMW Round Ireland Race record broken just three days earlier.

A full SP composites package was employed by McConaghy in the build of the ICAP Leopard, which included SP prepregs, dry fibre, resin, adhesives and Corecell, making the boat light, strong and fast. An advanced honeycomb design made with high elongation carbon was also installed in the hull to improve the toughness in areas subject to high slamming loads.

SP has been involved in a number of record breaking McConaghy projects including the highly successful Wild Oats XI, 2005 Triple Crown Winner and champion of the Sydney to Hobart race taking her third consecutive title in 2007, the first boat in the 42 year history of the competition to achieve back to back line honours.

Dubai Maritime City Authority and Dubai Police discuss steps
to enhance registration and licensing for Dubai’s
commercial and leisure maritime boats

Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) recently met with Brigadier Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Deputy Director General of the Dubai Police Department of Preventive Security, within the framework of strengthening cooperation with governmental and regulatory bodies in Dubai.  The parties discussed plans to develop new strategies and regulations for security and maritime safety, training and registration of maritime boats; and marine driving licences; increasingly critical functions as Dubai transitions into an international maritime hub.

In addition, the two parties discussed the possibility of Dubai Police participating in discussions relating to the preparation of maritime laws and registrations in Dubai, which are under the direct responsibility of DMCA.

During the meeting, DMCA, under its newly launched entity 'Raseina', underscored its commitment to cooperate with Dubai Police and also announced that DMCA will unveil new measures and regulations beginning September 2008 aimed at further improving the maritime sector. The new initiatives and services are in line with DMCA's objective of expediting and streamlining the registration and licensing processes in the UAE maritime sector.

Amer Ali, CEO, DMCA said: "Dubai Maritime City Authority is taking concrete steps to enhance the delivery of maritime services and consolidate Dubai's reputation as a centre for maritime excellence. The establishment of the Marine Registration and Licensing Department is one of the key initiatives that will help us attain our objectives. This new department will serve as a convenient and efficient platform to facilitate licensing and registration procedures as well as other maritime-related activities."

Notably, the Emirates International Maritime Academy was established for the purpose of training drivers of boats and yachts. In addition, discussions were made in regards to the issuing of maritime driving licences and an appropriate action plan for this activity. DMCA will cooperate with Dubai Police in training concerned personnel and informing them of the licensing procedures and other related issues.

Dubai Maritime City is a multi-purpose maritime complex that incorporates a full range of industrial, commercial, residential and leisure facilities distributed in six distinct districts: Harbour Offices, Harbour Residences, Maritime Centre, Dubai Maritime City Campus, Marina District, and the Industrial Quarter managed by Dubai Drydocks.
